Since November 2020, Sophie has created unique hand-stitched works of fiber art, selling at local markets and breweries in the Boston area while steadily expanding into gallery and residency contexts. Her practice blends traditional embroidery and stitching with fabric collage, shadow-box framing, and occasional wearable technology to explore astronomical themes and social justice narratives. Pieces range from small, intimate works to larger compositions, each balancing experimentation with craftsmanship. In 2022, Sophie began framing her work within collaged fabric shadow boxes, marking a transition toward more polished, professional presentations and laying the groundwork for future large-scale mixed media exhibitions that center personal and universal stories of bodily autonomy and healing. By 2024, she began teaching embroidery, extending her practice into pedagogy and community-based learning.
In parallel, Sophie has created experimental wearable works, including Gravity Jeans (Completed in 2020), developed with the support of the Colorado Scholars of Astrophysics and Art, Zachory Berta-Thompson, and the Astronomical Society of the Pacific. This fully functional, washable piece incorporates an acrylic-painted section of NASA’s GRAIL Gravity Map of the Moon across the denim surface, merging practicality with scientific precision. Gravity Jeans, along with a myriad of other fiber works, were most recently exhibited at the Aeronaut Cannery in Everett, Massachusetts (through January 4, 2023).
Sophie’s fiber works and wearable projects have been recognized through features, exhibitions, and residencies with institutions such as Aeronaut Brewery, Boulder County Parks & Open Space, and the Cambridge Center for Adult Education.
